Brest's anti-LGBTQ+ protest fails, while left and LGBT+ community turn out in force. The protest against LGBTQ+ workshops in Brest's libraries was a flop, with only nine people responding to the call of the far-right party Reconquête ! on Wednesday in front of the Brest town hall. At the same time, the left and the LGBT+ community turned out in force. There was no photo, Wednesday, June 3, on the Liberty Square. On one side, nine people with tricolor flags. On the other, more than 200 protesters waving rainbow flags. Two groups separated by a police cordon, out of fear of clashes. Left-wing parties, unions and LGBTQ+ collectives had called for this counter-protest in reaction to Reconquête !'s attacks on the programming of the Brest library network. For Pride Month, five thematic workshops for children are proposed on June 6 and 13. A philosophical workshop on difference for 8-12 year olds, and four sessions of storytime by drag queens for 4-7 year olds. The far-right party and its Parents Vigilant collective see this as indoctrination of children and denounce woke ideology. These are stories adapted for children, with two dads, two moms, to show children that there is diversity. This is very important, to inculcate tolerance, defends Camille from the BLT association (Brest trans, non-binary and questioning). Jacques, an LFI militant from Plouguerneau who openly affirms his homosexuality, also thinks that this is part of education to learn about difference. When we see the rise of fascism, of the far-right, it's scary. These are parties that fuel hatred. There were no incidents, but some hostile slogans were chanted by the protesters. Get out, No quarter for fascists, no fascists in our neighborhoods, Everyone hates Reconquête ! On the other side of the police cordon, the small group regrets being caricatured. We are not homophobic, we are against all stigmatization of the LGBT community, assures Yann Leriche, a departmental official of the party. But 4-7 years old seems very delicate to us. We would like to have maximum guarantees for this young fragile public. We do not want there to be indoctrination. Marie-Laure, a member of Parents Vigilant, is concerned about this propaganda that takes place in our libraries, in our schools. It has nothing to do with it. We have other things to learn from our children. She confides her suffering, less than a year after her own daughter's gender transition. And would like children to be protected from what she calls ideology. At the initiative of this mobilization, Emmanuelle Nouyou, the deputy departmental delegate of Reconquête !, is indignant that public money finances these events. We are not against the Pride march, against the LGBT or against the Exergue association. We are only on the neutrality of public services, that's where it stops. It must be done in private places. The Zemmourist party has questioned the prefect of Finistère to verify the legality of these workshops.
